Since the establishment of ASEAN in 1967, Sri Lanka has maintained a longstanding interest in fostering closer ties with Southeast Asia’s foremost regional organization. Today, the Embassy of Sri Lanka to ASEAN, based in Jakarta, serves as the official mission dedicated to strengthening Sri Lanka's engagement with ASEAN and its Member States, while promoting dialogue, regional cooperation, and mutual prosperity. Sri Lanka's relationship with ASEAN is rooted in shared commitments to peace, stability, multilateralism, and sustainable development across the Asia-Pacific.
In 2007, Sri Lanka acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and became a member of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), marking a significant milestone in its engagement with the regional organization. Through the ARF, Sri Lanka has actively contributed to dialogue and cooperation on political and security issues, disaster management, maritime security, and confidence-building measures. Sri Lanka served as Co-Chair in the cooperation areas of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Disaster Relief and Defence Education and hosted several Inter-Sessional Meetings (ISMs) in Colombo from 2023 onwards demonstrating active engagement within the work of the ARF.
In addition, Sri Lanka is currently pursuing ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner (SDP) status, reaffirming its intention to deepen cooperation in areas of shared interest and to contribute meaningfully to ASEAN's objectives and community-building efforts.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath held a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, in Manila, Philippines, on 24 July 2026, on the sidelines of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
The celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia was held as part of the 33rd ASEAN Regional Forum in Manila on 23 July 2026.
Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening ASEAN–Sri Lanka relations and exchanged views on ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
