On 6 August 2026, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Indonesia and ASEAN Sashikala Premawardhane, met with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia, Dr. Andy Artha Donny Oktopura, to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the marine and fisheries sector.

Welcoming the Ambassador and accompanying delegation to the Ministry, Secretary General Oktopura expressed Indonesia's commitment to further enhancing marine and fisheries sector cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides agreed to review and renew the existing framework agreement for cooperation in the marine and fisheries sector, with a particular focus on the early establishment of a Joint Technical Committee. The discussion also explored opportunities for cooperation in the Aquaculture and Mariculture sectors including the breeding of fish species such as milkfish, grouper, and barramundi. In this regard the importance of exchanging technical expertise, organizing reciprocal study visits, and exploring investment opportunities in Sri Lanka were highlighted.

The establishment of a maritime dialogue mechanism between the two countries was also one of the key highlights of the meeting.

The Indonesian side reaffirmed its readiness to extend support to small-scale ornamental fish farmers affected by Cyclone Ditwah in November last year at the request of the Govenment of Sri Lanka.

The meeting concluded on a positive note and was attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jakarta.
